Physical vs chemical change /
In a physical change, the chemical identity remains the same (melting ice). In a chemical change, new substances form (rusting iron). Reversibility alone does not decide the type of change.

4. The World of the Living (सजीव जगत)
Characteristics of living things /
Living organisms show nutrition, respiration, growth, response to stimuli, excretion, reproduction and cellular organisation. A seed may look inactive but can germinate under suitable conditions. Movement alone does not prove something is living.
Cell: basic unit of life / कोशिका: जीवन की मूल इकाई

Human digestion /
Route: Mouth → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus.
The mouth chews food and saliva begins starch digestion. The stomach churns food and uses acid/enzymes. Most digestion and nutrient absorption occur in the small intestine. The large intestine absorbs water and salts. The liver produces bile; the gallbladder stores it. Bile helps emulsify fats but is not an enzyme.
Respiration, blood and heart /
- Red blood cells carry oxygen using haemoglobin /

Ecosystem and food chain /
Producers make food; consumers obtain food from other organisms; decomposers such as many bacteria and fungi break down dead matter. Energy flows through a food chain; matter is recycled.
5. Motion, Force and Pressure
Motion / गति: position changes with time relative to a reference point. Types include rectilinear (straight line), circular, periodic and rotational motion.
Pressure = Force ÷ Area
Example: 120 m ÷ 30 s = 4 m/s. Speed has magnitude only; velocity has magnitude and direction.
Force and friction /
Force is a push or pull that can change motion, direction or shape. Contact forces include friction and muscular force; non-contact forces include gravity, magnetic and electrostatic forces. Friction opposes relative motion between surfaces. It helps walking and braking but causes wear and energy loss.
Pressure example: A sharp knife has a smaller contact area, so the same force creates greater pressure. SI unit: pascal (Pa) = N/m².
6. Heat and Temperature (ऊष्मा एवं तापमान)
Heat is energy transferred because of a temperature difference. Temperature measures how hot or cold something is.
Conduction / चालन
Heat transfer through particle interactions, common in solids. Example: metal spoon in hot tea.
Convection /
Heat transfer by bulk movement of liquids or gases. Example: water circulating as it heats.
Radiation /
Energy transfer by electromagnetic waves; no material medium required. Example: Sun warming Earth.
Sea and land breeze /
Land heats and cools faster than the sea, creating local pressure differences.
7. Electricity and Magnetism (विद्युत एवं चुंबकत्व)
An electric circuit is a complete conducting path. In a closed circuit, current can flow; an open circuit breaks the path. Copper is a conductor; dry rubber is an insulator under ordinary conditions.
Series circuit: one path; a break can stop the whole circuit. Parallel circuit: separate branches; other branches may still work if one branch breaks.
Magnets and electromagnets /
- Like poles repel; unlike poles attract. /
- Magnetic force is strongest near poles. /
- Current through a coil can create an electromagnet. More turns or greater safe current can strengthen it.
8. Light, Sound and Natural Phenomena
Reflection / परावर्तन: light returns from a surface. Angle of incidence equals angle of reflection. Refraction / अपवर्तन: light changes direction as its speed changes between media.

Sound / ध्वनि: produced by vibrations and ordinarily requires a material medium. Frequency (Hz) relates to pitch; amplitude relates to loudness. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum.
Solar eclipse—Moon between Sun and Earth. Lunar eclipse—Earth between Sun and Moon. Lightning is an atmospheric electrical discharge; thunder is produced by rapid heating and expansion of air.
9. Natural Resources and Environment
Air contains mainly nitrogen and oxygen. The water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection/runoff. Soil forms slowly through rock weathering and organic matter decomposition.
|---|---|
| Solar, wind, flowing water, sustainably managed biomass / सौर, पवन, बहता जल, टिकाऊ जैवभार | Coal, petroleum, natural gas, many minerals / कोयला, पेट्रोलियम, प्राकृतिक गैस, अनेक खनिज |
Three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Pollution can affect air, water, soil and sound environments. The greenhouse effect naturally warms Earth; human-caused increases in greenhouse gases strengthen warming.

134. [Questioning] Which question best promotes higher-order thinking?
Correct answer: C. What evidence would distinguish evaporation from boiling?
Solution: It asks learners to compare concepts and justify an answer with evidence.
Shortcut idea: Ask “why/how/evidence?”
Important note: Recall questions are useful too, but should not dominate inquiry.
135. [Teaching aids] A model is most useful when the teacher…
Correct answer: A. Explains what it represents and its limits
Solution: Models simplify reality; discussing their scope prevents new misconceptions.
Shortcut idea: Model = useful simplification, not reality.
Important note: Use concrete, visual and symbolic representations as appropriate.
136. [Local context] Why use local examples in science teaching?
Correct answer: A. They connect concepts with learners’ experiences
Solution: Familiar contexts can make abstract ideas meaningful and invite observation.
Shortcut idea: Connect known → new.
Important note: Local examples should still be scientifically accurate.
137. [Language] In a bilingual science classroom, the teacher should…
Correct answer: A. Treat home language as a learning resource
Solution: Learners can reason in familiar languages while learning precise scientific vocabulary.
Shortcut idea: Language supports thinking.
Important note: Introduce technical terms clearly and consistently.
138. [Peer learning] Structured group investigation can develop…
Correct answer: A. Collaboration and evidence-based argument
Solution: Students share roles, compare evidence and explain reasoning.
Shortcut idea: Roles + evidence + reflection.
Important note: Use individual checks to see what each learner understands.
139. [Practical work] The strongest reason for a student experiment is to…
Correct answer: A. Connect ideas with evidence and process skills
Solution: Experiments support observation, measurement, reasoning and theory testing.
Shortcut idea: Practical + reflection = learning.
Important note: A demonstration alone is not automatically inquiry-based.
140. [Misconceptions] A student concludes that all metals are magnetic after testing iron. Best next step?
Correct answer: B. Test several metals and refine the claim
Solution: Testing copper, aluminium and other samples challenges overgeneralisation.
Shortcut idea: Sample more than one case.
Important note: Evidence supports a narrower claim: some metals are strongly magnetic.
141. [Scientific attitude] Which behaviour best shows scientific attitude?
Correct answer: A. Changing a claim when reliable evidence contradicts it
Solution: Scientific reasoning is open to revision in response to evidence.
Shortcut idea: Evidence over ego.
Important note: Scientific conclusions are provisional and testable.
142. [Environment project] Students investigating school waste should first…
Correct answer: A. Measure and classify waste systematically
Solution: A baseline audit provides evidence about types and amounts of waste.
Shortcut idea: Measure before proposing.
Important note: Avoid handling hazardous waste; follow school safety rules.
143. [Health literacy] Which source is generally best for reliable public-health guidance?
Correct answer: B. Recognised public-health agency or qualified professional
Solution: Credible agencies use evidence review and publish accountable guidance.
Shortcut idea: Check author, evidence, date and institution.
Important note: Critical evaluation is essential for health information.
144. [STEM] A design challenge asking students to build a paper bridge and test load mainly combines…
Correct answer: A. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics
Solution: Learners apply material properties, iterative design, measurement and numerical comparison.
Shortcut idea: Design → test → improve.
Important note: Failure during prototyping is useful evidence.
145. [Environmental education] Which approach best develops environmental responsibility?
Correct answer: A. Local observation followed by evidence-based action
Solution: Investigating a local issue and taking realistic action connects knowledge to responsibility.
Shortcut idea: Observe → analyse → act.
Important note: Discuss individual, community and policy-level responses.
146. [Evaluation] A rubric improves assessment when it…
Correct answer: A. Makes success criteria explicit
Solution: Rubrics communicate dimensions of quality and support consistent feedback.
Shortcut idea: Clear criteria = transparent assessment.
