From a Small Hockey Club to the International Stage

Harshdeep Kapoor’s journey in hockey is not simply a story of medals, tournaments and sporting achievements. It is a story of courage, loss, perseverance and an unwavering determination to fulfil a dream.

Born on 18 May 2000 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Harshdeep comes from a lower-middle-class family. He picked up a hockey stick at the age of just 10, beginning his journey at a small local club known as Prakash Hockey Club.

What started as a childhood passion soon became a mission — a mission connected deeply to his family and, especially, to his father’s dream of seeing him represent India.

A Childhood Changed Forever

At the age of 11, Harshdeep experienced a devastating loss when his father died by suicide. The incident happened in front of him and left a deep emotional impact on his young life.

Despite the enormous pain, Harshdeep tried to continue moving forward. Just seven months after his father’s death, he joined the Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, determined to pursue the dream his father had for him — to become a player capable of representing the Indian hockey team.

He began training with renewed determination, working to improve every aspect of his game while carrying the hopes and dreams of his family with him.

But the challenges did not stop there.

A Journey Marked by Loss

In 2013, Harshdeep lost his grandfather. The loss affected him deeply, and before he could completely recover emotionally, another major change came into his life.

In 2014, his mother left and remarried without informing him. Once again, Harshdeep found himself struggling emotionally and found it difficult to concentrate on hockey.

At a time when he needed support the most, his uncle, Bhupender Singh Kapoor, stood firmly beside him.

His uncle’s support became an important source of strength. Slowly, Harshdeep began rebuilding himself, both mentally and as an athlete. He returned his focus to training and started improving his hockey skills and overall performance.

The Opportunity That Changed Everything

In 2016, Harshdeep received an opportunity to become part of the National Hockey Academy (NHA).

It was a turning point in his career.

During his time there, surprise trials were conducted under the guidance of Indian coach Roelant Oltmans. Harshdeep seized the opportunity and was selected for the Indian camp.

His hard work finally opened the door to the international stage.

Harshdeep was selected to represent India at the Asia Cup 2016 in Bangladesh, which became his first international tournament.

And the young player made the opportunity count.

Asia Cup 2016 — A Golden Achievement

The 2016 Asia Cup became one of the most important milestones of Harshdeep’s career.

Representing India at the international level for the first time was already a dream come true. Winning the tournament and being part of a gold-medal-winning Indian team made the achievement even more special.

For Harshdeep, that medal represented much more than sporting success. It represented years of sacrifice, training and the determination to continue despite everything life had placed in his path.

The Setback of 2017

Success was followed by another difficult chapter.

In 2017, Harshdeep was part of the Junior India camp, competing for a place in the core group. Out of approximately 60 players, he was not selected among the top 33 players in the core group.

For many athletes, such a setback can be devastating.

For Harshdeep, it became another reason to work harder.

He returned to training, determined to earn another opportunity. However, another obstacle came when he had to leave the National Hockey Academy because of the age-related eligibility rules following changes in the trial norms.

At that point, he felt that there was very little support around him. Some members of his family began telling him that perhaps he was no longer capable of achieving his dream of representing India.

But Harshdeep refused to let those words become the ending of his story.

Another Loss, Another Test of Strength

In 2019, before the lockdown, Harshdeep suffered another heartbreaking loss.

He lost his beloved grandmother. She passed away while he was speaking to her on a video call.

After experiencing so many losses throughout his childhood and youth, Harshdeep could easily have abandoned his dream.

Instead, he continued.

The Dream Is Still Alive

Harshdeep has now also built a career as a government employee with the Department of India Post. Yet becoming a part of the Indian hockey team remains one of his greatest ambitions.

His sporting journey includes participation in 10 Hockey India National-level tournaments and one international tournament, along with the unforgettable achievement of winning the gold medal at the 2016 Asia Cup.

Today, Harshdeep describes himself as someone still fighting to make his dream a reality — a dream that began with a hockey stick in his hands and his father’s hopes in his heart.

His journey reminds us that success is not always about how many times you win. Sometimes, success is simply having the courage to stand up and continue after life has knocked you down again and again.
