Just like Khelo Rugby operates across every corner of Kolkata, Sumit Kumar Royโs journey began from the Behala location, where rugby was already being played at the grassroots level. It was on these local grounds that his connection with the sport first took shape.
In the beginning, Sumit would go to the ground not for the game, but for the jersey and food. Every year, a 10-day Winter Camp was organized, and one day in December 2015, a friend told him, โChal, free mein jayenge โ achha khana milega aur jersey bhi milegi.โ That day marked a turning point โ it was the first time Sumit ever saw rugby.
Interestingly, he didnโt like playing at first. Rugby wasnโt the attraction โ food was. But something about the game stayed with him. After that winter camp, he slowly started playing.
In 2018, Sumit temporarily left rugby and shifted to football, dreaming of playing for India one day. However, reality struck โ there were many players better than him, and that dream slowly faded. But that realization brought clarity.
In 2019, he returned to rugby with a firm decision: ๐ โAb rugby kabhi nahi chhodunga.โ
The road was not easy. There were days when he didnโt even have bus fare, so he would cycle all the way to Dharamtala Maidan for training. Pure dedication, discipline, and belief carried him forward.
His hard work finally paid off in 2022, when he played his first National Championship in Patna. Representing West Bengal, his team achieved a proud moment by winning the Bronze Medal โ a milestone that confirmed he was on the right path.
This journey โ from a boy who came for food and a free jersey to an international rugby player for India โ is the true spirit of Sumit Kumar Roy.
