Part I — Natural Phenomena /

1. Reflection of Light /

Reflection occurs when light strikes a surface and returns to the same medium. We see most objects because they reflect light into our eyes. A smooth, polished surface gives regular reflection; a rough surface scatters reflected rays in many directions (diffuse reflection).

  • Law 1: Angle of incidence = angle of reflection. Both angles are measured from the normal, not from the mirror surface.
  • Law 2: The incident ray, reflected ray and normal lie in the same plane.

A plane mirror forms a virtual, erect image of the same size; image distance equals object distance; the image appears laterally inverted. A concave mirror can converge light and may produce magnified images for suitable object positions. A convex mirror gives a wider field of view and usually forms a virtual, erect, diminished image, so it is useful as a vehicle rear-view mirror.

2. Refraction of Light /

Refraction is the change in direction of light as it crosses from one transparent medium to another because its speed changes. Light generally bends towards the normal when entering a slower medium such as glass from air, and away from the normal when entering a faster medium such as air from glass. At perpendicular incidence, the ray changes speed but not direction. Frequency stays the same across the boundary.

A convex lens is thicker in the centre and converges parallel rays in air. A concave lens is thinner in the centre and diverges rays. Lens power is measured in dioptres (D): P = 1/f, with focal length f in metres. Convex lenses have positive power; concave lenses have negative power.

3. Rain and the Water Cycle /

The Sun heats water in oceans, lakes, rivers and soil. Water evaporates; plants also release water vapour through transpiration. Moist air rises and cools. Water vapour condenses on tiny particles to form cloud droplets or ice crystals. Particles grow and fall as precipitation—rain, snow or hail—when heavy enough. Water then infiltrates soil, replenishes groundwater, flows into rivers, or returns to the sea. This continuous movement is the water cycle.

A rainbow forms when sunlight is refracted, dispersed into colours and internally reflected in raindrops. For a primary rainbow, the Sun is generally behind the observer and rain is in front. Red is on the outer edge; violet is on the inner edge. Rainwater harvesting collects roof or surface runoff for later use or groundwater recharge. Water for drinking must be collected and treated safely.

4. Earthquakes /

An earthquake is ground shaking caused by a sudden release of energy, commonly when rocks slip along a fault as tectonic stresses build up. The underground starting point is the focus (hypocentre); the point directly above it at the surface is the epicentre. Seismic waves travel through Earth and along its surface. A seismograph records ground motion. Earthquake magnitude describes source size; intensity describes observed effects at a location.

Safety: Indoors, drop low, cover your head and neck under sturdy furniture, and hold on. Stay away from windows. Do not use lifts. Outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings, trees and power lines. After shaking stops, expect aftershocks and follow official instructions. Secure heavy furniture and prepare an emergency kit in advance. Exact earthquake time, location and magnitude cannot currently be predicted reliably.

Part II — Natural Resources /

5. Air / वायु

Air is a mixture of gases. Dry air contains about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, with argon, carbon dioxide and trace gases. Water vapour varies with weather. Oxygen supports respiration and combustion; carbon dioxide is used in photosynthesis. The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs much harmful ultraviolet radiation. Air pollution can come from vehicles, industry, burning fuels and waste, dust and fires. Fine particles and gases can harm lungs and the heart. Greenhouse gases absorb and re-emit infrared radiation; human-caused increases, especially carbon dioxide and methane, contribute to global warming.

Conservation: use cleaner fuels and public transport, maintain vehicles, avoid burning leaves or plastic, improve ventilation, conserve electricity, and protect trees and green spaces.

6. Water / जल

Water is essential for life, agriculture, sanitation, ecosystems and industry. Around 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water, but most is salty ocean water. Only a small proportion is accessible freshwater. Potable water is safe to drink. Boiling can kill many disease-causing microbes, but it does not remove most dissolved chemicals; filtration removes many suspended particles but may not remove all pathogens or chemicals. Treatment must suit the contamination.

Groundwater is recharged when water infiltrates and percolates into the ground. Excess pumping can lower the water table and sometimes cause land subsidence. Conserve water by repairing leaks, using efficient fixtures, reusing suitable greywater, harvesting rainwater and preventing pollution. Treat sewage and industrial wastewater before release.

7. Soil /

Soil develops slowly through weathering of rocks and decomposition of organic matter. It contains mineral particles, humus, air, water and living organisms. Topsoil often contains the most humus and biological activity, making it especially important for plant growth. Soil texture depends on sand, silt and clay proportions. Soil supports plants, stores water, cycles nutrients and provides habitat.

Soil erosion is the removal of topsoil by water or wind. It increases when vegetation is removed, slopes are left bare, or overgrazing occurs. Prevent erosion by planting suitable vegetation, maintaining ground cover, contour ploughing, terracing and using windbreaks. Compost, crop rotation and balanced nutrient management can improve soil health.

8. Coal and Petroleum /

Coal, petroleum and natural gas are fossil fuels formed from ancient organic matter over millions of years. They are non-renewable on a human timescale. Coal formed mainly from ancient plant remains; petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons formed from buried organic matter, especially in ancient marine environments. Crude petroleum is separated in refineries by fractional distillation, based on different boiling ranges. Products include petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG components, lubricants and bitumen.

Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and can release particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Impacts include climate change, respiratory illness and acid rain. Reduce harm through energy efficiency, cleaner energy, public transport, pollution controls and avoiding wasteful consumption. Natural gas generally emits less CO₂ per unit of energy than coal when burned, but methane leakage can reduce its climate advantage.

9. Environmental Conservation /

Environmental conservation means protecting biodiversity, habitats, air, water, soil and natural resources while using them sustainably. The waste hierarchy begins with Reduce, then Reuse, then Recycle. Composting turns suitable biodegradable waste into a soil amendment. Segregate waste and dispose of hazardous materials safely. Protect forests, wetlands and wildlife habitats; prevent illegal hunting and invasive species spread. Use water and energy efficiently, choose durable products, reduce single-use plastics, and support community conservation.

Renewable resources such as sunlight and wind are naturally replenished. Non-renewable resources such as coal and petroleum form extremely slowly relative to their use. Sustainable use means avoiding waste and keeping extraction within ecological and renewal limits.
