Tripura is set to witness a major aviation and transport revolution! Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has assured that he will approach the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to establish a customs check-post at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala. This crucial step will pave the way for declaring Agartala Airport as an international airport, boosting connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Tripura’s Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, after a recent meeting with Naidu in New Delhi, confirmed that the customs check-post proposal is moving forward.

1️⃣ Agartala Airport to Get a Customs Check-Post for International Status
- Before an airport is declared international, the MHA must approve a customs check-post for immigration services.
- Minister Naidu has assured that he will push for its approval, which will enable Agartala to handle international flights and passengers.
- Once approved, Tripura will emerge as a key air hub for the Northeast, strengthening links with Bangladesh, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian countries.
2️⃣ Revival of Kailashahar Airport: A New Air Link for North Tripura
- Minister Naidu will visit the abandoned Kailashahar airport in Unakoti district to assess its current condition and determine the feasibility of its revival.
- The plan includes renovations to accommodate small aircraft, enhancing connectivity for people in North Tripura.
- A final decision on reopening the airport will be taken after the Budget session of the Lok Sabha.
3️⃣ New Regional Office of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Agartala
- Tripura’s Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to request the establishment of an FCI regional office in Agartala.
- The Centre has assured that it will consider the proposal seriously.
- Additionally, ₹53.17 crore in pending reimbursement bills for the state will be cleared.
4️⃣ Vande Bharat Express Expansion: A High-Speed Upgrade for Tripura 🚆
- A request was made to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the extension of the Vande Bharat Express up to Agartala to improve rail connectivity.
- Authorities have also requested the conversion of the single railway track between Dharmanagar and Sabroom into a double line for faster train services.
