Her father was also a kabaddi player, but due to poor financial conditions, he could only play at the state level. Determined to see his daughter achieve what he couldn’t, he encouraged Ritu to pursue sports seriously.

At just 14 years old, on 1st September 2006, Ritu joined the State Sports Hostel in Bilaspur. The journey was not simple—her home was 14 hours away, requiring three bus changes. Despite the emotional and physical challenges, she stayed strong and began her kabaddi journey.

She trained under coach Rattan Lal Thakur for nearly 8 years, building the foundation of her powerful defensive skills.

🏆 Beginning of Kabaddi Career

Ritu’s talent became evident early in her career. In 2011, she got the opportunity to represent India for the first time as a captain in the Junior Asian Kabaddi Championship. She led the team to a gold medal, marking a historic start to her international journey.

This victory gave her confidence that she could achieve much more at the global level.

⚡ Years of Struggle and Setbacks

The period between 2012 and 2017 was one of the toughest phases of her life. Despite consistent performance and winning national gold medals, she faced repeated disappointments.

She attended national camps but was often dropped from the final squad. In 2017, even after being selected for the Indian camp, her name did not appear in the final list for the Asian Championship team.

These setbacks were painful, but Ritu never gave up.

Just two days after her wedding, on 24 April, she returned to the camp in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, showing extraordinary dedication.

However, the Asian Games were postponed by one year, making her wait even longer after months of intense training.

Finally, in 2023, Ritu Negi was given the responsibility of leading the Indian team as captain at the Asian Games 2022.

On 7 October, India defeated Chinese Taipei in the final and won the gold medal. This was one of the proudest moments of her life, as she led the nation to victory on one of the biggest stages.
