🧠 Easy Trick to Identify Reported Speech

If the sentence has no quotation marks and uses words like that, if, whether, it’s probably reported speech.

🪄 Basic Rules of Reported Speech

🎯 Rule 1: Change the Tense

When the reporting verb (like “said” or “told”) is in the past, change the tense of the reported sentence.

Direct SpeechReported Speech
“I am happy.”He said that he was happy.
“She plays football.”He said she played football.
“We will go there.”They said they would go there.

Tense doesn’t change if the reporting verb is in the present.

🎯 Rule 2: Change Pronouns

Pronouns must match the subject and object.

DirectReported
“I love you.”He said he loved me.
“We are tired.”They said they were tired.

🎯 Rule 3: Change Time Words

Direct WordIndirect Word
nowthen
todaythat day
yesterdaythe day before
tomorrowthe next day
agobefore
herethere

Indirect: She requested me to help her.

4. Exclamations

O – Order change (subject first)
P – Pronouns adjusted
C – Conjunction added (that, if)
A – Adverbs of time/place changed
T – Type of sentence identified

💡 Bonus Tip by SirBikramSutradhar:

✅ If the sentence begins with reporting verb in present or future tense, do not change the tense of the reported speech.
