📌 What is Subject-Verb Concord?

Subject-Verb Concord (also called Subject-Verb Agreement) means the verb in a sentence must agree in number and person with its subject.

📝 If the subject is singular, use a singular verb.
📝 If the subject is plural, use a plural verb.

🧠 Golden Rule:

👉 Singular Subject → Singular Verb
👉 Plural Subject → Plural Verb

📘 Examples in Daily Life:

  1. He eats breakfast at 8 AM.
(Singular subject “He” → singular verb “eats”)
  2. They play football every evening.
(Plural subject “They” → plural verb “play”)
  3. My mother cooks delicious food. 🍲 ✅
(Singular subject “mother” → singular verb “cooks”)

📚 10 Essential Rules of Subject-Verb Concord:

✅ Rule 1: Two Singular Subjects joined by and → Plural Verb

  • Ram and Shyam are best friends.

✅ Rule 2: Subjects joined by or / nor / either…or / neither…nor → verb agrees with nearest subject

  • Neither Rina nor her friends are coming.
  • Either the teachers or the principal is present.

✅ Rule 3: Uncountable nouns take singular verb

  • Milk is good for health.

✅ Rule 4: Collective nouns may take singular or plural verbs

  • The team is winning. (as one unit) ✅
  • The team are arguing among themselves. (as individuals) ✅

✅ Rule 5: Each, Every, Everyone, Someone, Nobody → Singular verb

  • Each of the boys has done the work.
  • Everyone likes chocolate.

✅ Rule 6: Titles of books, movies, etc. → Singular

  • “The Avengers” is a great movie.

✅ Rule 7: Distances, Time, Money, Weight → treated as singular

  • Five hundred rupees is a big amount.
  • Ten years is a long time.

✅ Rule 8: Plural nouns that refer to a single object → Singular verb

  • Mathematics is interesting.
  • The news is fake.

✅ Rule 9: Plural nouns ending in -s but used singularly (e.g., politics, economics)

  • Politics is tricky.

✅ Rule 10: There/Here + Verb + Subject

  • There is a cat on the roof.
  • There are many stars in the sky.

💡 Super Smart Tricks (By Grandmaster Bikram Sutradhar)

Trick 1: Ask “Who is doing the action?” to find the subject.
Trick 2: For either/or → always check the subject nearest to the verb.
Trick 3: Words like each, every, someone always take singular verbs—even if the noun sounds plural.
