7 Powerful Lessons from the Inspiring Journey of Vaibhav Khushlani – From Small-Town Dreams to National Hockey Success

Introduction – Who is Vaibhav Khushlani?

Vaibhav Khushlani is a rising Indian hockey player from Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, whose journey proves that determination can overcome every obstacle. Born on 29 November 2005, Vaibhav comes from a hardworking middle-class family. His father runs a small tea shop, his mother is a teacher, and his sister works at HDFC Bank.

Like many young athletes in India, Vaibhav’s path to success was not easy. There was no sports background in the family, and initially his father encouraged him to focus more on studies. However, with time and dedication, Vaibhav earned the trust and support of his family.

Interestingly, hockey was never part of his original plan. One day he went to the ground to play Kho-Kho, but since no one else showed up, he casually picked up a hockey stick and started playing for fun. That unexpected moment changed his life forever.

Under the guidance of coaches Avinash Upadhya, Lokendra Sharma, Sameer Dad, and Habeeb Hasan, Vaibhav slowly transformed from a curious beginner into a determined athlete aiming to represent India.

1. A Simple Beginning That Sparked a Big Dream

Vaibhav spent his childhood in Mandsaur, a city far from the big hockey centers of India. His journey began in 2015, when he first visited a local ground. What started as a casual activity soon turned into passion.

At first, he played hockey only for enjoyment. But one of his teachers noticed his potential and motivated him to give trials for a professional academy. That advice planted the seed of a dream that Vaibhav had never imagined before.

2. The Academy Trials That Almost Ended the Journey

Vaibhav attempted academy trials for two consecutive years, but each time he faced rejection. For many athletes, such setbacks are enough to give up.

In his final attempt, something unbelievable happened. Another goalkeeper was mistakenly selected instead of him. Disappointed and heartbroken, Vaibhav almost decided to quit hockey forever.

But destiny had other plans.

Soon after, he received a phone call informing him that a mistake had been made and that he must report to Bhopal for the final trials the next morning. That single call changed everything.

In 2018, Vaibhav officially joined the Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in Bhopal, marking the real beginning of his professional journey.

3. Fighting Rejection and Mental Pressure

Life inside the academy was not easy. Vaibhav faced intense challenges, including mental pressure from a coach who often criticized him and limited his practice opportunities.

Sometimes he was asked to collect balls instead of training. At other times he was blamed for indiscipline or treated unfairly in front of other coaches. These experiences created immense stress for a young athlete trying to prove himself.

But instead of quitting, Vaibhav continued working hard and believed that one day his performance would speak louder than the negativity around him.

4. Injury, Recovery, and the Lockdown Challenge

Just when things started improving, Vaibhav suffered a serious injury that forced him to take one year of bed rest followed by six months of rehabilitation.

Recovering from such an injury is extremely difficult for any athlete. As he was working to regain fitness, the lockdown struck, further delaying his progress.

Even during the academy’s phased training camps after the pandemic, Vaibhav was placed in later batches due to internal decisions. Despite these hurdles, he stayed patient and kept preparing for his comeback.

5. The Mentors Who Changed His Story

Every successful athlete has someone who believes in them during tough times. For Vaibhav, that support came from several people.

His senior Juber Khan stood by him when he felt isolated. Later, goalkeeper coach Sir recognized his talent during a training camp and recommended that the academy bring him back.

Another huge inspiration in his journey has been Olympic medalist Vivek Sagar Prasad, who supported him and helped him get opportunities to prove his abilities.

Their belief helped Vaibhav rebuild his confidence and continue chasing his dream.

6. The Turning Point – Senior National Success

After years of struggle, Vaibhav finally got the chance to play Senior National Hockey Championships.

He represented his team in two consecutive senior nationals (2024 and 2025) and achieved a historic milestone by winning silver medals, marking one of the biggest achievements for Madhya Pradesh in senior national hockey.

This moment became the true turning point of his career.

7. Achievements That Reflect Hard Work

Vaibhav’s dedication has already brought several important achievements:

Silver Medal – 15th Hockey India Senior National Championship

Gold Medal – Khelo India University Games

Silver Medal – Surjit Hockey Tournament (BPCL)

Participation in All India Public Sector Tournament (Union Bank)

Participation in the historic Beighton Cup (Eastern Railway)

Received a stipend from Union Bank

These accomplishments highlight his growth from a small-town player to a recognized national-level athlete.

The Senior Who Stood Strongly Beside Him

During one of the most difficult phases of his career, when Vaibhav was repeatedly facing disappointments and politics in selections, there was a moment when he almost decided to quit hockey completely. At that time, a senior player Swapnil Kawadkar played a very important role in motivating him.

Swapnil Bhai constantly supported Vaibhav and reminded him that setbacks are a part of every athlete’s journey. Even when Vaibhav’s Senior National selection was cut due to politics, Swapnil Bhai encouraged him not to lose hope and to keep preparing for bigger opportunities ahead.

As Vaibhav himself shares, Swapnil Kawadkar is one of the seniors who stood beside him when he was thinking about quitting hockey. His guidance and belief helped Vaibhav regain confidence and continue his journey in the sport. That support became one of the silent but powerful reasons why Vaibhav kept fighting and never gave up on his dream.

Conclusion – A Dream Still in Progress

Vaibhav Khushlani’s story is a powerful reminder that success is not always a straight road. His journey includes rejection, injuries, politics, and mental pressure, yet he never stopped believing in himself.

From a young boy who accidentally picked up a hockey stick to a national medalist, Vaibhav has already achieved what many only dream of.

But for him, the biggest goal is still ahead.

His dream is simple yet powerful — to wear the Indian jersey and represent the country at the international level.

If his journey so far proves anything, it is that with persistence, courage, and the right support, even the most unexpected beginnings can lead to extraordinary destinations.
